Our own Mr. Clegg does not recommend booking your trip to Aspen. Or at least not yet or not for snow. Let us turn to him now.
Good morning or afternoon, depending on where you call home. As I’ve kept you abreast, this early season, your best bets for maximum snow is the central part of the country, where there are no hills, or the east coast. If the predictions hold, fresh powder will replace the normal bulletproof ice and fun will be had by all. Also, for a guarantee, Miami Beach and Las Vegas are good options.
I’ve had many people asking me, though, about normally staid, usually dependable Colorado. Well, things are not looking great or at least not as of yet.
My colleague in Denver, Mr. Makens, reports:
As of Tuesday, Denver remains snowless, which is only the 13th time the city has not recorded snowfall in August, September and October since records began in 1882.
Although there are a few storm systems to move through the next seven days, there doesn’t appear to be much of a sign of snow for the city.
In the previous six years, the city has waited for a measurable snowfall into November on three other occasions.
The late start to a snow season does not necessarily imply the season will be dry. Last year, there was no snowfall measured until Nov. 5 and yet the season ended with 73 inches of snowfall, 16 inches above average.
Still, the mountain resorts are offering early season deals that may be too good to pass up. The Aspen Times notes:
Aspen Skiing Co. is among the resorts trying to spur early business. Customers who book a minimum of two nights lodging for trips between Nov. 24 and Dec. 18 receive 40 percent off lift tickets and 15 percent off Four Mountain Sports equipment rentals. The trips must be booked at least seven days in advance.
Skico also is offering two complimentary lift tickets to customers who book at least three nights at the Little Nell Hotel for vacations prior to Dec. 18.
Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs is teaming with Iron Mountain Hot Springs to offer a Slope & Soak 4-Pack again this season. Buyers get four full-day lift tickets plus four day passes to the hot springs, which has 16 hot springs soaking pools.
Colorado Ski Country USA said its members are offering deals featuring discounted lift tickets, lessons, equipment rentals and early-bird discounts on lodging and season passes.
Crested Butte is offering 20 percent off lodging when four or more nights are booked.
Steamboat is kicking off the season with the Boat Launch pass, which includes three days of skiing from Nov. 24 to Dec. 18 for only $169.
All of these are very good deals and if you bring your own snow would certainly make for an enjoyable week.
